How a Flexwork Initiative Allowed the Cleveland Clinic to Shrink its Real Estate Footprint – Case Study
A case study on how hospital systems can greatly reduce their need for office space by embracing flexwork
The need for increased access to flexwork when moving to a smaller office location
The Cleveland Clinic quickly realized a formal flexwork program would be needed as they sought to relocate its Information Technology Division to a much smaller work environment. This group of approximately 700 employees would be moving from a faltering old warehouse that had been converted into office space to a vacant, however much smaller, space at its administrative campus, putting its workforce into an environment that was more in line with the Clinic’s mission to be a world-class organization. A substandard work environment made Human Resource’s objectives of infusing the organization with young talent exceedingly difficult, as did a culture that frowned upon flexible work arrangements.
A thoughtful approach to increasing access to flexible work arrangements
Stegmeier Consulting Group (SCG) developed the workplace strategy, change management strategy and communications plan, communications content and materials, and an employee engagement program. FlexMatch™ Suitability Assessments were administered to all employees, with the goal of ranking workforce members from the most suitable to the least suitable for flexible work as a scientific method for managers to use in selecting candidates for Flexible Work Arrangements.
SCG facilitated the development of a Connected Workforce Initiative that significantly expanded the Clinic’s under-utilized Flexible Work Arrangements Program to a major Human Resources strategy. Separate training modules were created and delivered by SCG for leaders and individual contributors in preparation for the relocation.
Leading the transition to new ways of working, SCG helped the organization improve talent attraction and retention, and increase workplace flexibility.
